Are you an experienced RVN ready to take the next step into leadership?
Looking for a role where you can truly influence standards, mentor others, and help shape the future of a close-knit practice?

At Hertford Vets for Pets, we’re excited to welcome a Head Registered Veterinary Nurse who will play a key role in leading our nursing team and helping us continue to deliver outstanding patient care and client service.

“Hertford Vets for Pets provides excellent opportunities to grow and learn. Nurses play a crucial role in the day-to-day running of the practice, and the team is close-knit, supportive and professional.”

Why Join Us?
You’ll be joining a small, friendly team where nurses are genuinely valued and empowered. This is a role with real influence giving you the opportunity to shape clinical standards, support your colleagues’ development, and contribute to how the practice evolves.

You’ll work closely with our experienced Practice Owner (an experienced vet with a Master’s in Clinical Oncology), who is fully supportive of nurse-led development and progression.

About the Practice
We’re based in the beautiful market town of Hertford and currently have:

  • 2 Veterinary Surgeons
  • 1 RVN
  • 2 VCAs
  • 1 Receptionist

Our purpose-built clinic is well-equipped to support high-quality clinical care, including:

  • Separate cat and dog wards
  • Isolation unit
  • Dedicated sterile theatre
  • Digital X-ray and ultrasound
  • In-house lab with microscope
  • Capnography and pulse oximetry

We’re proud of our loyal client base, many with insured pets, which allows us to work cases up thoroughly. Appointments are structured to support quality care:

  • 30 minutes for non-routine consults
  • 15 minutes for vaccines

We also regularly host visiting specialists (cardiology, advanced imaging, orthopaedics), giving you and your team valuable exposure and learning opportunities.

About the Role

As Head RVN, you’ll play a vital leadership role within the practice. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the day-to-day running of the nursing and VCA team
  • Acting as a role model for clinical excellence and professionalism
  • Supporting and developing individual team members’ skills and interests
  • Assisting with training, appraisals, and clinical audits
  • Helping to optimise workflow and improve efficiency
  • Being hands-on clinically across theatre, inpatient care, nurse clinics, and consults

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys both clinical work and leadership and wants to be involved in the wider success of the practice.

About You
We’re looking for a qualified, confident RVN who:

  • Enjoys supporting and motivating others
  • Takes pride in delivering high clinical standards
  • Has strong communication and organisational skills
  • Is interested in leadership, coaching, and practice development
  • Is proactive, positive, and a true team player
  • Enjoys variety and being involved in all areas of nursing

Work–Life Balance & Flexibility
We genuinely value balance and are happy to offer full-time or part-time hours depending on what suits you best.

  • No OOH
  • 1 in 3 Saturdays (9am–1pm) with time off in lieu or additional pay
  • Two weekday shift patterns (both include 30-minute unpaid lunch):
  • 8:45am–5:15pm
  • 10:45am–7:15pm

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary up to 35,000 DOE
  • £1,000 Welcome Bonus (paid at 3 and 6 months)
  • RCVS and VDS fees paid
  • Funded and supported CPD
  • Pension scheme
  • Contribution towards private healthcare
  • Exclusive colleague discounts including 20% off at Pets at Home, The Groom Room and The Vet Group

If you’re looking for a leadership role where your voice matters, your development is supported, and you can genuinely make an impact within a warm, collaborative practice — we’d love to hear from you.
