Senior Registered Veterinary Nurse

Ref:  38053
Contracted Hours:  40
Custom Field 4:
Job Type:  Permanent
Location:

Handforth, TRF, SK9 3RN

Description:

We are looking for a high calibre Senior Veterinary Nurse to join our small animal practice in Altrincham.

This role is suited to an experienced RVN who takes pride in clinical standards, works efficiently, and is looking for a role with real clinical scope and involvement in clinical decision making. If you are looking for a role where you can have meaningful clinical input and continue to develop, this could be a great fit.

We are a modern, extended first opinion practice with 5 consult rooms, 2 theatres, dedicated recovery, and a strong clinical team. Our focus is on improving how we practise, not just maintaining the status quo.

How We Work

Our nurses are actively involved in clinical decision making and patient management.

This includes:

  • Nurse led triage, both in clinic and on the phone
  • Expanding nurse consultation clinics
  • Active use of Schedule 3 procedures, including surgical support and development
  • Nurses performing first stage dentals, including full dental charting and radiography
  • Use of local anaesthetic techniques, particularly dental nerve blocks
  • Multimodal analgesia, including analgesic infusions where appropriate
  • Active involvement in anaesthesia, including multiparameter monitoring (ECG, capnography, blood pressure) and recovery
  • Low flow anaesthesia as standard practice
  • Introduction of tools such as the HT Vista (AI-assisted lump assessment device) to support clinical decision making
  • Development of point of care ultrasound (POCUS) within the nursing team
  • Use of AI assisted note taking to improve efficiency and accuracy

Nurses are trusted to take ownership within their role and contribute to maintaining high clinical standards.

Clinical Environment

We aim to provide a high standard of first opinion care and are continuously improving how we work.

As a partner owned and led practice, we make decisions locally, including areas such as pricing and clinical approach. This allows us to be more responsive, consistent, and fair for both clients and the team.

This includes:

  • A focus on fair and transparent pricing, with recent changes to improve consistency and value
  • Access to a visiting cardiology and abdominal ultrasound specialist
  • A team with strong clinical interests, including a CertAVP holder (medicine) and vets with a focus on advanced soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures

This provides a varied caseload and opportunities to be involved in more advanced work within a first opinion setting.

The Role

This is a full time position, 40 hours per week, with no out of hours, no Sundays, and no overnight inpatient checks.

Your role will include:

  • Delivering high standard inpatient, theatre, and consult nursing
  • Supporting clinical flow and triage decisions during busy periods
  • Driving nurse led clinics and Schedule 3 utilisation
  • Supporting the development of advanced nursing skills, including surgical and anaesthesia skills
  • Coaching and supporting RVNs, SVNs, and VCAs
  • Contributing to protocol development and continuous improvement

Your clinical standard and approach will help set the tone across the team.

Standards and Culture

We have high standards and take pride in maintaining them.

We value clear and open communication and a culture of team learning. We regularly discuss cases, share ideas, and support each other to improve. When things don’t go to plan, we review them constructively and focus on what we can learn and do better next time.

We encourage people to take ownership of their work and continue developing, with standards applied consistently across the team.

We have a strong and collaborative nursing team, including engaged student nurses who are actively involved in clinical work. We work well together and support each other on busy days.

About You

  • Experienced RVN with strong clinical skills across general practice
  • Confident in theatre, inpatient care, and nurse consultations
  • Comfortable with triage and clinical decision making
  • Efficient and organised under pressure
  • Interested in developing advanced nursing skills (e.g. ultrasound, dentistry, surgery, anaesthesia)
  • Motivated to improve standards, not just maintain them

Previous senior experience is useful, but not essential. Clinical ability and mindset matter more.

What We Offer

  • £34,000 to £38,000 depending on experience and capability
  • No out of hours
  • No overnight inpatient checks
  • Generous CPD, actively supported (including ultrasound, dentistry, surgery, anaesthesia)
  • Paid memberships (RCVS, BVNA, VDS)
  • Contributory pension
  • 20% Pets at Home discount and other company benefits

We are also progressing towards becoming a more environmentally responsible practice, with ongoing changes to reduce waste and improve sustainability.

Why This Role

We are building a practice where nurses are trusted to use their skills properly, standards are clear and consistently applied, and patient care comes first.

If you are looking for a role where you can develop and contribute we would love to hear from you! For more information please email northvet@vets4pets.com or to apply visit www.vets4petscareers.com
