Veterinary Care Assistant
Handforth, NET, SK9 3RN
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a hard-working and enthusiastic veterinary care assistant to complement our wonderful team here at Newcastle Vets for Pets.
About Us:
We are a well-established small animal practice located in the Benton area just outside of the thriving Newcastle city centre. We are ideally located with excellent bus and metro transport links and plenty of on-site parking.
We opened fifteen years ago and since then have built a wonderfully diverse and loyal client base as well as an excellent reputation for our high standards of clinical care and a caring and committed team.
Our spacious practice is well equipped with on-site theatre, digital xray, ultrasound machine, dental xray, in-house laboratory, pharmacy, separate dog and cat wards, four consult rooms and a large, dedicated colleague room. There is also plenty of space for colleague pets!
About the Team and Culture:
You will be joining a friendly and supportive team who are looking forward to welcoming you into the family. You will be working in a practice where your opinions matter, your feelings are respected, and your work life balance and wellbeing are a priority. We believe that our team is our greatest resource and so you will be joining a culture of diversity and a consistently caring and supportive atmosphere.
Newcastle Vets4Pets is driven by our exceptional standards in patient care, and we work hard to offer the best service possible to our clients while always looking out for each other. We also like to play hard and regularly organise team outings such as axe throwing, Lake District hikes, escape rooms and lots of meals out, as well as regular lunch-time takeaways, an annual bake-off competition and a practice book club.
The wellbeing of all our colleagues is hugely important, and management are always actively looking for ways to improve and support the health and wellness of the team. We encourage colleagues to take regular breaks whenever they need them and to feel like they can speak openly if something is not working well or if they are not feeling their best. It is our constant aim to create an environment that is safe and secure where colleagues feel supported and valued.
The Role:
You will be joining a clinical team of five vets and seven nurses who are all guided and supported by our dedicated Head Nurse and Clinical Lead, Laura Morton.
The practice is looking for a keen and reliable veterinary care assistant to provide support and assistance to our existing team and our patients. The role will include animal handling, patient care, cleaning and hygiene, reception duties and working closely with the vets and nurses to provide patient care on a daily basis.
This role is ideally suited to someone with a genuine love for animals who is compassionate and patient and is interested in making our patients’ experience with us a positive one. You should have good communication skills and minimum basic computer skills, as well as the ability to work with initiative in an unpredictable environment. Some form of customer service experience is required, and previous veterinary experience is advantageous, though not a requirement as full training will be provided.
The role itself is full-time (37.5 hours), Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. There is no Sunday work, out of hours or on-call required.
Benefits:
The benefit package at Newcastle Vets4Pets includes (but is not necessarily limited to)
- Salary starting from £24k
- Company pension scheme
- Holiday allowance of 5.6 weeks per year, increasing to 6.6 weeks after two calendar years of service, plus an additional day off for your birthday
- Full training and support with the potential for career progression
- Company reward hub full of discounts, cashback offers and access to the Cycle to Work Scheme.

Pets just see people. They aren’t biased and they don’t discriminate. We take our inspiration from pets, and we value and respect difference in all its forms. Our aim is to reflect the diversity of the communities we operate in, and every colleague can help us achieve this. We encourage our people to be themselves so even if your skills and experience don’t perfectly align, if you think you can make a unique contribution through your values and behaviours, we want to hear from you!
